In the 1860 census, Marcus is 11 and lives with John and Lucinda Wood in Dalton, Whitfield County, Ga. In the 1870 census, Marcus is 21 years old and living with his parents. His occupation is listed as farmer, but a note says that he "is afflicted, cannot labour." In the 1880 census, Marcus Newton Wood, 31, is living in Mill Creek, Whitfield County, Ga. On the same page are John H. Wood, Erwin Wood and Sabra King Wood, so the family is living very close to one another. Marcus is a farmer. He was born in Georgia. His wife, Martha C., is 28 and is keeping house. Also in the household are their children, Mamie E. (note different spelling), 4; Lou E.B, 2; and Lucinda L., 1.
