Thomas enlisted in Company A, 3rd Battalion Light Artillery (Palmetto Battalion – South Carolina) on August 8, 1863 at Charleston, South Carolina. He was reported as “absent without leave since Aug. 27, 64” on a Company Muster Roll dated July and August 1864. He was reported as present on the next Company Muster Roll dated Sept. and Oct. 1864. He was paroled at High Point, North Carolina on May 2, 1865 in accordance with the terms of a Military Convention between General Joseph E. Johnston and Major General W. T.
