    • Manning A. Wood enlisted as a Private in Company C, 22nd South Carolina Infantry on January 1, 1862 at Columbia, South Carolina. He was wounded at the Battle of Boonsboro Gap, Maryland on September 14, 1862 and was admitted to Hospital #8 in Richmond, Virginia on September 28, 1862 with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was detailed as a teamster in the Quartermaster Department on December 22, 1862 by the order of Brigadier General Ripley. He was absent without leave from September 6, 1863 through October 15, 1863. He was left in New Bern, North Carolina sick and fell into the hands of the enemy on May 6, 1864. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Virginia and arrived on May 18, 1864. He was forwarded to Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland and was then transferred to Elmira yankee prison, New York on August 15, 1864 and died at Elmira on December 26, 1864 of typhoid pneumonia. He is buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery in grave #1257. Source: John T. Nash, 6th great grandson of Capt. William Wood, Jr.
