      John enlisted in Company F, 1st North Carolina Junior Reserves at Camp Holmes on May 30, 1864 and mustered in as a Private. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal subsequent to July-August 1864 and was promoted to 1st Corporal between August 31 and December 31, 1864. He was admitted to hospital on December 19, 1864 with an unknown complaint and returned to duty on an unspecified date. He was paroled at Greensboro as a Full Corporal on May 8, 1865.
