- He was mortally wounded in the July 1 action at Gettysburg and captured by the enemy. He died in the hands of the enemy on July 11 or 12, 1863. Both dates are in the official rolls.
Penuel suffered a pretty gruesome wound at Gettysburg. Sounds like it was probably grape shot, canister shot, or fragments from an exploding shell.

Penuel enlisted as a Private in Company I, 5th North Carolina Infantry in Wake County, North Carolina at the age of 16 on July 15, 1862. He was wounded in the testicles, thigh, and shin and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. He was hospitalized at Gettysburg where he died on July 12, 1863. The Roll of Honor indicates that he was wounded in six places at Gettysburg and was voted a Medal of Honor by his Company for gallant conduct. -- Source: John T. Nash
