Spencer resided in Randolph County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting as a Private in Comapny E, 58th North Carolina infantry in Randolph County at the age of 41 on December 7, 1863. He was reported sick in hospital on February 29, 1864 and was furloughed home sick for forty days on or about March 25, 1864. He returned to duty on an unspecified date and was captured at Kolb’s Farm, Marietta, Georgia on June 22, 1864. He was transferred to Louisville, Kentucky where he arrived on July 14, 1864 and was then transferred to Camp Douglas yankee prison, Chicago, Illinois where he arrived on July 18, 1864. He was released from Camp Douglas on June 16, 1865. -- Source: John T. Nash
