      Newton Byrd Aaron

Newton Byrd Aaron was born April 30, 1882, near Bremen, Cullman County, Alabama, eldest son of George Washington and Margaret (Powell) Aaron, and grandson of Ira Arron and Winnie (Tubb) Aaron. Both grandparents were born in Walker County and both died at Hanceville, Cullman County, Alabama, having moved there in middle life. Both before and after the war between the states, in which the grandfather served in the Confederate Army, he followed agricultural pursuits and acquired a large farm estate. Newton was reared on his father's farm and gave him assistance until he was twenty-one years old, in the meanwhile attending the public schools of Winston County. For about eight years afterward he carried on farming for himself, but his fellow citizens called him into public life, testifying to their confidence and esteem by electing him to the very important office of sheriff of Winston County. He established his home then at Double Springs, with his office faithfully and efficiently for his first term. For several years after retiring from the sheriff's office he was engaged in the mercantile business at Double Springs; he then became a public official as cattle inspector, his practical knowledge of livestock making him valuable in this office until he was again elected sheriff. Newton married in May 1901 at Old Map in Cullman County, Alabama to Miss Annie Denson, daughter of Thomas and Amanda (Burdett) Denson. They have five children: Otho D., Lurline, Elaine, Newton B. Jr., and Maxine.
