Notes for Berryman M. Wood:
In the 1850 census, Berryman M. Wood lives in Murray County, Ga., with his mother, Lucinda Wood. There is no listing of his father. Berryman is 5, William is 6, Sabrey is 4 and Newton is 1. He was born in Georgia and so were the rest of his family.
In the 1860 census, Berry M. is 13 and is living with his parents, John and Lucinda Wood, in Dalton, Whitfield County, Ga. He was born in Georgia. Under the column "Attended school within the last year," there is no checkmark.
Berry can't be located in the 1870 census, perhaps because he may have been a single man living alone. He is not among the children living with his parents in Whitfield, Ga.
According to Pauline Reynolds, a volunteer who looked up some information for me in Little Rock, Berry Wood and Miss Sallie Hall were married on Feb. 4, 1872, in Pulaski County, Ark. Recorded in Book 3 - Page 341 of marriage records. Source: Pulaski County, Ark., Marriage Records Index 1820-1901;
Published by Arkansas Research, Copyright 2000 by Emily Tucker. That raises the question of whether each came to Arkansas with family or alone.
In the 1880 census, Berry is listed as B.M. Wood, is 34 years old and listed as a laborer. He was born in Georgia and his parents were born in South Carolina. Sarah is 26 years old and is keeping house. She was born in Georgia, her father in South Carolina and her mother in Tennessee. Living with them are their children, John, 7, Marga, 5, "Nettie," 3, and Pandora, 11 months.
On May 15, 1880, Berry M. Wood recorded 79 acres as a homestead entry original, according to the Homestead Act or Treaty of May 20, 1862. It was issued in the land office in Little Rock as document 919.
In the 1900 census, Berry Wood lives with his wife, Sarah R., in Gray Township, Pulaski County, Ark. He was born in October, 1845, in Georgia. He is 54 years old and has been married for 28 years. He was a farmer who could read and write. Sarah was born in February, 1854, and was 46 years old. She
was born in Georgia, her father was born South Carolina and her mother was born in Tennessee. With them lived their children: James B., 17, born in October, 1882, in Arkansas, a laborer on a farm; Grover C., 11, born January, 1889, and at school; Dennis, 8, born in July 1891, who was at school; and Emma, 7, born in June, 1893, and who was at school.
In the 1910 census, B.M., 64, lives in Pulaski County, Ark., and is a farmer. He had been married 38 years, so in about 1872. He was born in Georgia and his parents were born in South Carolina. He could read and write. Sarah is 55 years old and was the mother of 12 children of whom seven were still living. She was born in Georgia. Her father was born in South Carolina and her mother was born in Tennessee. She is a housekeeper on a farm. They live on Centennial Road right next to their daughter, Emma, and her husband, Alvin. She could read and write.
