John Hamilton Wood (1809-1879)
In the 1850 census, John is not listed among the large family living in
Murray County, Ga., with William and Sabra Hall, his wife's parents. The
Wood children live with Lucinda, 30, born in South Carolina. With her are
her children, John H., 8; William, 6; Berryman M., 5; Sabrey, 4; and Newton,
1. John, the oldest of the Wood children, was born in Georgia; that means,
they arrived there from South Carolina by at the latest 1842.
In the 1860 census, Jno., 50, a farmer, born in South Carolina, and Lucinda, 37, born in South Carolina, are living in Dalton, Whitfield County, Ga. Living with them are John H., 17, a farmer; G.W.T.,15, a farmer; Berry M., 13; Marcus, 12; Joel Holcomb, 3; and Mary J. Holcomb, 1 month. There is no indication who the Holcomb children are. Whitfield County is in northern Georgia, just across the border from Chattanooga, Tenn. Dalton is the county seat.
In the 1870 census, John, 60, and Lucinda, 50, live in Tunnel Hill, Whitfield County, Ga. He is a farmer who was born in South Carolina. Another occupation comment exists, but cannot be read. She is keeping house and was born in South Carolina. With them live William, 26, a farmer; Marcus, 21, whose occupation is listed as "farmer, afflicted, cannot labor"; Irvin, 18, works on farm; and a Frances Miller, 18, who is keeping house, probably a maid. Value of property is $1,200; personal property is worth $200. In 1880, Berry and Sarah Wood have already moved to Arkansas.
