William J. Wood (circa 1803 - ?)

In the 1830 census William J. Wood is living in Spartanburg, S.C. With him live two males under the age of 5; and himself, between 30 and 40. Two females, one under 5 and one between 20 and 30 live with him.

In the 1850 census, William J. Wood, 46, born in Georgia, lives in Murray County, Georgia, where he is a farmer born in South Carolina. His wife, Margaret, is 42 and was also born in South Carolina. Their son, Thomas, M., 17, is also a farmer and was born in South Carolina. Their other children are Margaret, 15; Berryman, 13; William W., 11; Mary B., 7; and Martha, 3. Interestingly enough, he also named his son Berryman; at this time, he is 13 and the other Berryman is 5. Also living with them are his uncle, Isham
Wood, 26, born in South Carolina. The children were all born in South Carolina except for Martha, who was born in Georgia.

In the 1860 census, the family has moved to Cashville, St. Clair County, Alabama. William is 57 and is a farmer. He's become fairly prosperous with his real estate worth $1,000 and his personal estate worth $977. His wife, Margaret, 54, is a housewife. Their children, B.S., 24, with a personal estate of $5; William W., 23; Mary El, 17; and Martha, 10, living with them. All were born in South Carolina, except Martha, who was born in Georgia.
